FCA regulations explained.

debt bills and stress

Don’t let your debt get the better of you.

On the 1st April, the Financial Conduct Authority took over the regulations of the payday loan industry, but what does this mean for consumers?

What were the changes made?

  • Loan rollovers are limited to two.

A rollover is used to extend a loan. Whilst payday loans are typically a 30 day lending period, rollovers extend this time period.

  • The number of times they take money from a borrower’s bank account is restricted to two.

The customer will only be allowed to roll over twice, preventing them from incurring escalating interest fees.

  • Lenders must only try to take the full repayment.

The payday lender must only try and take the full repayment, and not small amounts of debt.

  • Add a ‘wealth warning’ to all payday loan advertising.

The FCA has requested that lenders must now provide the following on their adverts: “Warning: Late repayment can cause you serious money problems. For help, go to moneyadviceservice.org.uk.”

  • Tell customers where they can also get free debt advice.

When a loan is rolled over for the first time, the payday lender must give the customer an information sheet written by the FCA, this sheet gives the customer the debt free advice they may need.

  • Make sure the loan is affordable to the customer.

Full, and proper affordability checks will need to be carried out by the payday lender.

National minumum wage to rise to £6.50

Minimum wage to rise

National minimum wage rise is welcome news.

From October this year, the National Minimum Wage for adults will rise by 19p to £6.50 per hour.

Workers aged 16-17, will see a rise of 7p taking their wage to £3.79 per hour.

In addition to this, those registered on the national apprentice scheme will see their hourly rate rise to £2.73.

However, the rise is still not in line with the recommended living wage, which for example, in London is £8.80ph.

Schools to teach dangers of the illegal lending industry.

Primary school children in England are to begin learning about the negative impact posed to them and their family from illegal Loan Sharks, the BBC reports.

In conjunction with schools, the IMLT have created a set of ready-made lessons to help children understand the illegal industry from a young age.

Ensure that you and your family understand the dangers of loan sharks.

Mr Lender’s top Pancake toppers!

With Shrove Tuesday just around the corner, the team here at Mr Lender thought we would share our favourite pancake recipes and toppings and how to make them (without breaking the bank!).

First things first.

Make yourself a whole bunch of pancake batter.

Making the batter yourself means it will stretch further.

Making the batter yourself means it will stretch further.

Don’t go for the pre-made batter mixes, it’s so much cheaper (and easier) to make your own. For a family of 4 you will need roughly:

  • 100g plain flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 300ml semi-skimmed milk
  • 1 tbsp sunflower oil or vegetable, plus extra for frying
  •  a pinch of salt

So what are our favourite toppings?

Danielle – Chocolate and Banana

Melted chocolate is a seriously decadent pancake topping.

Melt some cooking chocolate in a microwave (the tip – do it for 20 secs at a time, to stop it from congealing), add some sliced bananas and BINGO!

Claire – Lemon and Sugar

Sometimes, traditional is best.

Sometimes simple is best. Use fresh lemons instead of the pre-packaged juice, and add a sprinkling of sugar on top. Tasty. Jen – Cinnamon and Honey

The healthy alternative for those with a sweet tooth!

The healthy alternative for those with a sweet tooth!

I like to stay healthy, honey & cinnamon is one of my favourite combinations to help sweeten most things, whether it’s porridge or pancakes!

Andrew – Courgette and Feta

A savoury alternative to the sweeter toppings.

A savoury alternative to the sweeter toppings.

I don’t really have a sweet tooth, so courgette and feta is one of my top choices. Fry off the courgette in a little oil, and crumble in some feta. A little goes a long way with both of these

Liam – Golden Syrup

One of the UK's top pancake 'toppers'.

One of the UK’s top pancake ‘toppers’.

Another national favourite. Sometimes you just can’t go wrong with a slathering of golden syrup. It’s worth investing in a tin, because you can use it again and again in future recipes.

So there you have it, we’re all quite excited for Pancake Day, and can’t wait to get experimenting. What are your favourite toppings? Let us know in the comments below!

The perfect DIY Valentine’s Day with Mr Lender

Love is in the air

So it’s that special time of year again, where everyone can show their partner just how much they care and spoil them rotten. What to do? Where to go? What to buy? These are a few of the questions that I’m sure we all get caught up thinking about so Mr Lender is here to help.

 DIY Decorations

Recycle Christmas decs for a little Valentine's sparkle.

Recycle Christmas decs for a little Valentine’s sparkle

What can be easier and more personal than staying at home and spending the evening together? That’s right, not much can compare so why not go that extra mile and put your own stamp on making the evening just that bit more special with a few of our ideas.

Dig out your Christmas lights and decorate your room, cut out some hearts from red card and paper and hang them from the ceiling with some string. If you can’t get hold of red paper, try using an old newspaper for a little vintage touch. The noticeable effort won’t go down unnoticed!

Fun and Games

Candy based treasure hunts add an extra injection of fun.

Candy based treasure hunts add an extra injection of fun.

Bring out the child in you with a treasure hunt! Write down all the things you love about your partner on separate pieces of paper, hide them in different places around the house. You can even use little heart shaped sweets as clues from one to the other!

Who needs flowers?!

Growing a plant together makes Valentine's go beyond one day.

Growing a plant together makes Valentine’s go beyond one day.

We see them everywhere and all women love them but we all know that they can be pricey. Instead why not buy some seeds, soil and a plant pot to give to your partner?

It doesn’t sound so romantic at first, but when you tell your partner that you’re going to plant it together and watch it grow just like the love you share…well who wouldn’t appreciate that?!

What are you doing for Valentine’s Day this year? Let us know in the comments below!

Mr Lender’s DIY winter beauty tips

We hear it every year in all the magazines. Young or old, Winter is harsh on your skin, it gets battered about by the weather, and we’re probably all guilty of just slathering lots of make up on, or not really changing up our routine from the Summer months.

Now we all know that skincare can be very expensive, so here at Mr Lender, we are revealing our favourite tips to help you cut down on spends but still look great (and more importantly, have great winter skin and hair).

DIY lip scrub

Winter can be really harsh on your skin, but none more so than your lips. Keep yours puckering soft, with our very basic recipe, that just means a tiny raid of your kitchen cupboard and a little bit of legwork.

Mix a little bit of brown sugar, with a tiny bit of honey, some olive oil and either some cocoa powder or ground cinnamon. Once applied let it sink in for a couple of minutes.
If kept in an airtight kilner jar, it will keep for a couple of weeks, and should be guaranteed to give you soft Spring ready lips!

Plumping lip gloss

Whilst we’re on the subject of lips, instead of shelling out for one of those pricy lip plumping lip glosses, all you need to do is add a few drops of peppermint oil to the gloss you already own! EASY.

Homemade facemask

Avocados and honey both have great softening elements to them. Combining the two, (use a very very ripe avocado if you can), and leaving on your face to soften that battered winter complexion will leave your face feeling revitalised. Once rinsed, finish off with your regular moisturiser.

Scent-sational bargain haircare

Lavender oil

Lavender oil is great for hair, skin and wellbeing.

Adding a few drops of lavender oil to your regular shampoo will not only help lift the scent of your hair, it can also create shine. A tiny bottle will go a really long way. We would also recommend adding a few drops to your pillow, to help aide your beauty sleep.

SO there’s our first round up, let us know what you think. Do you have any DIY beauty tips?
